PDF Won't Open? How to Fix a Corrupted or Damaged PDF

"There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." Few messages are more frustrating - especially for a contract or an assignment due today. Before you give up, work through these steps. Most damaged PDFs can be opened or at least partly recovered.

Step 1: Check the file size

A PDF of 0 KB or just a few KB is empty - the download or transfer failed completely. No tool can recover it; download it again or ask the sender to resend it.

Step 2: Try another viewer

Viewers are not equally strict. If Adobe Reader refuses the file, drag it into Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Browsers often open slightly broken PDFs without complaint - then you can use Print > Save as PDF to make a clean copy.

Step 3: Repair it automatically

  1. Open Repair PDF.
  2. Select the damaged file and click Repair PDF.
  3. The tool first rebuilds the internal structure (cross-reference table and page tree). If the file is badly damaged, it recovers every page that can still be read.

The repair runs in your browser, so confidential documents stay on your device.

Step 4: Get a fresh copy

Most corruption happens in transit: an interrupted download, a mail server that mangled the attachment or a USB stick removed too early. Downloading the file again - ideally with a different browser or network - often solves it instantly.

Why PDFs get corrupted

  • Incomplete downloads or email attachments.
  • Programs crashing or losing power while saving.
  • Faulty USB drives and memory cards.
  • Files renamed to .pdf that are not really PDFs.

How to prevent it

  • Keep a backup of important documents in cloud storage.
  • Always use "Safely remove" before unplugging USB drives.
  • Check big downloads finished before opening them.

Frequently asked questions

Can every corrupted PDF be fixed?

No. If most of the data is missing, only the surviving pages can be recovered, and some may be blank.

Will the repaired file look the same?

When the structure can be rebuilt, yes - text stays selectable. In the recovery mode pages are redrawn as images.

Is it safe to repair a PDF online?

With our tool, yes - the file never leaves your browser.
